The Red Browed Finch is a small, colorful bird that can be found throughout Australia, including the Coorongooba Campground in the Wollemi National Park. The Red-browed Finch is most easily recognised by its bright red eyebrow, rump and beak, on an otherwise green and grey bird. Upperparts are olive green with grey underneath. Both sexes are very similar in appearance.
If you’re interested in photographing the Red Browed Finch near the river in the Coorongooba Campground, here are some tips to help you get the best shots.
Before you start your photography session, it’s important to scout the area and look for signs of the Red Browed Finch. These birds are often found near water sources like rivers or streams, so look for areas with plenty of trees and foliage. The river in Coorongooba has a lot of low bushes at it’s edge, and that is where I found these examples.
To get clear and detailed photos of the Red Browed Finch, it’s recommended that you use a telephoto lens of course. I managed to get reasonably close however, and the Sony 70-200mm G Master II with the 2x Teleconverter was plenty of reach as these images are not heavily cropped.
Photographing these birds requires a lot of patience as they are pretty flighty at times, jumping from branch to branch. It may take some time for the bird to come into view without branches in front of it, so be prepared to wait. Once you’ve spotted the bird, stay still and quiet to avoid scaring it away.
When photographing the Red Browed Finch, keep in mind that the light is poor down by the river due to the tree canopy above, and to get good results will require higher ISO settings.
