Cooberrie Park Wildlife Sanctuary, Yeppoon QLD

Sun Conure

The sun conure (Aratinga solstitialis), also known as the sun parakeet, is a medium-sized parrot with strikingly vibrant colours, native to northeastern South America. Adult males and females look alike, both featuring black beaks, mostly golden-yellow plumage, orange-tinted underparts and faces, and wings and tails tipped in green and blue.

Sun Conure

During a recent trip to Yeppoon in Queensland, I had the pleasure of visiting Cooberrie Park Wildlife Sanctuary. It’s an incredible place if you’re looking for a hands-on experience with a wide variety of animals. I nearly missed spotting these two little birds, but I’m so glad I didn’t. The photos haven’t been colour-enhanced—these birds really are that bright and colourful in real life.
