Blue & Yellow Macaw

The Blue & Yellow Macaw (Ara ararauna), also known as the blue-and-gold macaw, is a large Neotropical parrot distinguished by its predominantly blue back, light yellow to orange underparts, and a gradient of green on the top of its head. It belongs to the group of large neotropical parrots known as macaws. This species is found in a variety of habitats, including forests (especially varzea), woodlands, savannahs, and open sections of terra firme in tropical Central and South America, as well as on the Caribbean island of Trinidad.

Blue & Yellow Macaw

On a recent trip to Yeppoon in Queensland, I had the pleasure of visiting Cooberrie Park Wildlife Sanctuary. It’s a fantastic place if you’re after a hands-on experience with a wide range of animals. Near the entrance, I was greeted by two Blue & Yellow Macaws perched openly, the first animals you see upon entering. They were total show-offs, and I ended up spending about an hour feeding and photographing them.
