Pilliga Sandstone Caves

On last year’s Outback adventure, we had a couple of nights in Narrabri on the way back to Sydney, and one of the attractions with photo potential was the Pilliga Sandstone Caves in the Pilliga National Park.

Our two night stay in Narrabri was a reprieve from the two days on the road to get here so we enjoyed the more relaxed time we had in Narrabri, and in particular the discovery of the best Pub we have seen in a long time, The Tourist Hotel.

It was newly renovated when we got there, and the owner who introduced himself to us, proudly showed us around the entire Hotel including the accommodation, which is where we will stay on our next visit that is for sure. The best part however is the food, as this place does some of the best Pub food you are ever likely to encounter. But I digress…

Pilliga Sandstone Caves

The Pilliga National Park is about a forty five minute drive out of Narrabri and it is without a doubt the most poorly sign posted tourist attraction ever. If you blink you will miss the very small sign indicating the park’s entrance. Once found however you will discover a great photo opportunity here. The walk is very easy and during our time there, very few visitors were around. (probably because of that poor signage!)

In the Pilliga National Park you can walk in the footsteps of the Gamilaroi people along the short Sandstone Caves walking track. You’ll pass through scenic forest to the impressive sandstone hills, with some containing ancient Aboriginal rock engravings. (metal grills cover the art for protection sadly) Take some time to read over the interpretive signage for more of an insight into this very special place.

The photo potential here is great as the sandstone caves offer up a rainbow of colour from very light almost white to the dark brown colour of the more exposed stone. I would think sunset or sunrise would have the potential to enhance that colour palette even further.
