The Restless Flycatcher is a bold, black and white bird found across eastern and northern Australia, including much of New South Wales, where it favours open woodland, forest edges and parkland.
It is easily recognised by its striking plumage and its constant tail flicking, a restless behaviour that gives the species its name. Feeding mainly on flying insects, it hunts by sallying out from exposed perches and returning repeatedly to the same spot.
Confident and highly territorial, the Restless Flycatcher is often conspicuous despite its simple colouring, announcing its presence with sharp calls and energetic movement.
