The Jacky Winter is a small, neatly patterned flycatcher found across much of southern and eastern Australia, including New South Wales, where it favours open woodland, forest edges and lightly treed farmland.
It is recognised by its grey upperparts, white underparts and black face mask, giving it a crisp, tidy appearance. Typically seen perched quietly on exposed branches or fence lines, the Jacky Winter hunts by darting out to catch insects in mid air before returning to the same perch.
Calm and unobtrusive in behaviour, it is a familiar but often overlooked bird of Australia’s open landscapes.
