The Welcome Swallow is a small, graceful bird found across much of Australia, including throughout New South Wales, where it is common around open areas, water and human habitation.
It is easily recognised by its glossy blue black upperparts, pale underparts and the distinctive chestnut forehead and throat. Feeding almost entirely on flying insects, the Welcome Swallow spends much of its time on the wing, gliding and swooping with agility.
Often nesting on buildings, bridges and other structures, it is a familiar and well liked presence, traditionally regarded as a sign of good fortune.
