Superb Fairy-Wren

The Superb Fairy-wren is one of Australia’s most beloved small birds, famous for the male’s electric blue and black breeding plumage, which contrasts sharply with the softer brown tones of females and non breeding males.

Widespread across south eastern Australia, including New South Wales, it favours gardens, scrub and open woodland, where it forages close to the ground for insects and spiders. Despite its delicate appearance, the Superb Fairy-wren is bold, curious and highly social, living in family groups with complex behaviours and constant soft chattering calls.

During breeding season the males’ intense blue colouring makes them a standout, and few birds are as instantly charming or recognisable in the Australian landscape.
