Red-tailed Black Cockatoo

The Red-tailed Black Cockatoo is a large, powerful cockatoo found across much of Australia, though it is generally uncommon in New South Wales outside specific inland and forested areas.

It is easily recognised by its dark, almost black plumage and the striking red panels in the tail of the male, while females show yellow spotting and barring. Feeding mainly on seeds from native trees such as eucalypts and casuarinas, the Red-tailed Black Cockatoo often travels in small, noisy groups.

Its slow, deliberate wingbeats and deep, rolling calls make it one of the most distinctive and impressive parrots in the Australian bush.
