The Pacific Black Duck is a medium sized duck found across Australia, including throughout New South Wales, where it inhabits lakes, rivers, wetlands and farm dams.
It is recognised by its mottled brown plumage, pale face with a dark stripe through the eye and a distinctive green speculum visible in flight. Feeding on aquatic plants, seeds and small invertebrates, the Pacific Black Duck is often seen dabbling in shallow water or grazing at the water’s edge.
Adaptable and widespread, it is one of the most familiar native ducks in the Australian landscape.
