The Mallard Duck is a medium sized dabbling duck best known for the male’s glossy green head, white neck ring and chestnut brown breast, while females are mottled brown for camouflage.
Native to the Northern Hemisphere, Mallards have been widely introduced elsewhere and are now common in parks, lakes and waterways, including parts of Australia. Highly adaptable, they feed on aquatic plants, seeds, insects and food scraps, often foraging by tipping forward in shallow water.
Familiar and confident around people, the Mallard Duck has become one of the most recognisable ducks worldwide.
