The Major Mitchell’s Cockatoo is one of Australia’s most striking parrots, instantly recognised by its soft pink and white plumage and the spectacular red and yellow crest that it raises when excited or alarmed.
Found mainly in arid and semi arid inland regions, it occurs only sparingly in New South Wales, favouring open woodland and scrub where large tree hollows are available for nesting. Unlike many other cockatoos, it is usually seen in pairs or small family groups rather than large flocks, and is known for its calmer, more deliberate behaviour.
Elegant and unmistakable, the Major Mitchell’s Cockatoo is often regarded as one of the most beautiful cockatoo species in Australia.
