Lyrebird

Lyrebirds are native to south eastern Australia, including New South Wales, and are famous for their extraordinary ability to mimic natural and artificial sounds with remarkable accuracy.

Outside of the male’s dramatic courtship displays, they are fairly plain brown birds, often seen foraging on the forest floor or perched quietly like this in dense bushland.

Their long tail feathers are still prominent even when not fully fanned, and their shy, elusive behaviour means they are far more often heard than seen.
