Laughing Kookaburra

The Laughing Kookaburra is one of Australia’s most iconic birds, instantly recognised by its large head, stout bill and unmistakable rolling laugh that echoes through bushland and suburbs alike.

Found across eastern Australia, including New South Wales, it inhabits open woodland, forest edges, parks and suburban areas, often perching conspicuously on fences or branches.

Despite being a kingfisher, it feeds mainly on land, hunting insects, small reptiles, mammals and even snakes. Bold, highly territorial and well adapted to human environments, the Laughing Kookaburra is a familiar and much loved presence in the Australian landscape.
