The Emu is Australia’s largest native bird and a powerful, flightless species found across much of the mainland, including parts of New South Wales. With its tall stature, shaggy brown plumage and long legs, it is built for covering large distances, capable of running at high speed across open country.
Emus inhabit grassland, woodland and semi arid regions, feeding on a wide range of plants, seeds and insects. Despite their imposing size, they are generally wary and nomadic, often moving in response to seasonal rainfall and food availability.
