The Australian Zebra Finch is a small, hardy finch native to inland Australia, including parts of western New South Wales, where it inhabits open grassland, shrubland and semi arid regions near water.
Males are easily recognised by their bright orange cheek patches, black and white barred throat and chest band, and red bill, while females are plainer grey with an orange bill.
Highly social and often seen in flocks, Australian Zebra Finches feed mainly on grass seeds and are well adapted to dry conditions. Their cheerful, high pitched calls and constant movement make them a lively presence in Australia’s inland landscapes.
