Australian Wedge-tailed Eagle

The Australian Wedge-tailed Eagle is the country’s largest bird of prey and one of the most powerful raptors in the Southern Hemisphere. Found across mainland Australia, including New South Wales, it is recognised by its massive wingspan, long wedge shaped tail and dark brown to black plumage.

Often seen soaring effortlessly on thermals, it feeds on mammals, reptiles, birds and carrion, playing an important role in the ecosystem. Solitary or seen in pairs, the Australian Wedge-tailed Eagle is an imposing and iconic presence in open woodland, mountains and arid landscapes.
