The Australasian Swamphen is a large, striking wetland bird found across eastern and northern Australia, including much of New South Wales, where it inhabits swamps, lagoons, reed beds and waterways with dense vegetation.
It is instantly recognisable by its deep blue to purple body, bright red bill and frontal shield, and long pinkish legs. Feeding mainly on aquatic plants, grasses and small animals, the Australasian Swamphen is often seen walking confidently through reeds or along the water’s edge.
Bold, noisy and highly territorial, it is a conspicuous and familiar presence in suitable wetland habitats.
