The Mulga Parrot is a beautifully coloured Australian parrot found across the drier inland regions, where it favours open woodland, scrubland, grassland and country with mulga and other dry-country vegetation. Males are especially striking, with rich green plumage, blue wing and tail tones, yellow highlights and warm red-orange patches, while females are softer and more subdued.
Usually seen in pairs or small groups, it spends much of its time feeding quietly on the ground, taking seeds from grasses, shrubs and trees, along with flowers, fruit and occasional insect larvae. Despite its bright colours, the Mulga Parrot can be surprisingly unobtrusive, blending into the muted greens, greys and ochres of the Australian interior.
