The Grey Butcherbird is a medium sized songbird found across much of Australia, including New South Wales, where it inhabits open woodland, forest edges, farmland and suburban areas.
It is recognised by its grey body, white underparts and bold black head and wings, along with a strong hooked bill. Known for its rich, complex and highly musical song, the Grey Butcherbird is one of Australia’s finest vocalists.
Feeding on insects, small birds and reptiles, it often impales prey on thorns or branches, a habit that gives butcherbirds their name.
