The Whistling Kite is a medium sized raptor found across much of Australia, including New South Wales, where it is commonly seen near rivers, wetlands and coastal areas.
It is identified by its long wings, slightly forked tail and pale head, along with the clear whistling call that gives the species its name. Feeding on fish, small animals and carrion, the Whistling Kite often patrols waterways or soars in wide circles before swooping to snatch prey.
Graceful in flight and frequently heard before it is seen, it is a familiar bird of prey in many Australian landscapes.
