The Brown Falcon is a medium sized bird of prey found across most of Australia, including New South Wales, where it inhabits open woodland, grassland and farmland.
It is highly variable in colour, ranging from pale buff to dark brown, but is usually recognised by its sturdy build, broad wings and habit of perching on poles or low trees while scanning for prey.
Unlike many falcons, the Brown Falcon often hunts on the ground, feeding on insects, small mammals, reptiles and birds. Adaptable and opportunistic, it is a familiar and widespread raptor in both rural and semi urban landscapes.
