The Azure Kingfisher is a small, brilliantly coloured kingfisher found along rivers, creeks and wetlands across eastern Australia, including New South Wales.
The Azure Kingfisher is unmistakable with its intense cobalt blue upperparts, rich chestnut orange underparts and long black bill, and is most often seen perched low over water before diving headfirst to catch small fish or aquatic insects.
Unlike the Sacred Kingfisher, it is closely tied to freshwater habitats year round and is rarely found far from the water’s edge.
